The Oak Cliff Cultural Center (OC3) will present I DON’T DREAM ABOUT THE FUTURE, a solo exhibition by Dallas-based multidisciplinary artist MOM (Brooke Chaney). The exhibition will kick off with a free public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at OC3, located at 223 W. Jefferson Blvd., adjacent to the historic Texas Theater.
MOM's work in I DON’T DREAM ABOUT THE FUTURE combines vibrant colors, abstract forms, and dimensional elements to construct dreamlike landscapes that explore the intersection of time and memory. These imagined worlds reflect temporal displacement, blending past, present, and future in a way that encourages viewers to pause and contemplate their own personal narratives within the transient nature of life. MOM draws inspiration from the tension between linear and cyclical time, questioning how these concepts shape our perception of existence.
The exhibition is shaped by MOM’s background in textile surface design, having earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Fibers from the University of North Texas. MOM’s expertise in processes like screen printing, vector drawing, and heat transfer vinyl is evident in the layered, surreal imagery that populates their paintings. Each piece features flat, opaque shapes that shift in color and saturation, creating a dynamic sense of movement and energy within the landscapes, all while reflecting their roots in textile design.
In addition to the opening reception, MOM will also deliver a gallery talk from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024, providing attendees with deeper insights into their artistic process, inspirations, and the conceptual underpinnings of the exhibition.
MOM, who has been actively creating since 2020, has quickly established a reputation for their work across multiple disciplines. In addition to painting, their art has been featured in large-scale installations and public murals, including a current piece at Meow Wolf's latest immersive art experience, The Real Unreal in Grapevine, Texas. MOM co-founded the award-winning artist cooperative TRADE Oak Cliff and has collaborated with national brands on custom artwork. Their work has been featured in prominent galleries across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including the 2024 AURORA Art Quest, Creative Arts Center, 500X Gallery, and Pencil on Paper Gallery.
I DON’T DREAM ABOUT THE FUTURE marks a continuation of MOM's exploration into personal and collective narratives, and the exhibition promises to offer a contemplative experience for viewers.
The Oak Cliff Cultural Center is operated by the Office of Arts and Culture and is open from Noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
