Preliminary investigation revealed that a passenger van was traveling northbound when the driver veered off the left side of the roadway. The driver overcorrected, lost control, and rolled over. According to Wise County EMS, the van appeared to have rolled several times.  The van carried 14 passengers, including the driver, with multiple passengers being ejected from the vehicle.

At the scene, three passengers, including the driver, were pronounced deceased. Three other passengers were transported by air to different hospitals with critical injuries, seven were transported by ambulance with non-critical injuries, and one passenger had a minor injury.

A fourth passenger was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Officials reported that only one passenger was wearing a seatbelt and was not seriously injured.

DPS Troopers are collaborating with the Medical Examiner’s Office, EMS, and hospitals to identify all individuals involved. Their identities will be released once they have been identified and next of kin notified.

Northbound US-287 was completely closed North of the South Business 287 exit for several hours.  The highway was opened at approximately 11:28 am.

The investigation is ongoing.
