The North Richland Hills Police Department announces with deep sadness the passing of retired K-9 Breta on Sunday morning, September 8. Breta, the department's first canine, joined the force on June 13, 2012, and set a high standard for future K-9 teams.
Breta was known for her exceptional service, having completed nearly 1,000 deployments in support of law enforcement. On her final patrol shift, she assisted the Arlington Police Department in an investigation leading to a $167,000 seizure. Despite her professional achievements, Breta was also cherished for her affectionate nature, often enjoying playful interactions and belly rubs from the community.
Breta retired on February 24, 2021, after nine years of service and spent her retirement with her human family, Mindy and Officer Tom Bulger. In June 2023, Breta began facing health issues, and the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and community members rallied to support her medical care.
Breta would have celebrated her 14th birthday this January. Private arrangements were held to honor her dedicated service. The department extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported and cared for Breta and offers condolences to the Bulger family during this difficult time.
