At 2:25 PM on Thursday, June 27th, a Lake Worth Police Department officer was en route to a call in progress with emergency lights and siren activated. As the officer approached the intersection of SH 199 and Paul Meador Dr., he decelerated to around 10 miles per hour and proceeded to clear the intersection.
Upon entering the intersection cautiously, a sedan traveling northbound on Paul Meador Dr. and making a left turn westbound onto SH 199 disregarded the red light and collided with the officer's vehicle. The impact caused the police vehicle to spin 180 degrees.
Both the officer and the driver of the sedan sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals for medical attention. Fortunately, both individuals are currently in stable condition. Members of the department's command staff have visited the injured officer, who is receiving support from family, friends, and colleagues.
