South Irving Man Accused of Assaulting 73-Year-Old Father Has History of Violence, Drug Offenses

Carlos Adrian Chavarria

On Monday, May 26, 2025, at 7:43 a.m., Irving Police were dispatched to the 400 block of High School Lane near Bowie Middle School in South Irving after a report of a domestic disturbance. The caller told officers that Carlos Adrian Chavarria, 44, had assaulted his father during a fight inside the family’s home.

According to police reports and the arrest affidavit, Chavarria lived in the home along with his father and his adult son, Daniel. Earlier that morning, Chavarria entered Daniel’s bedroom and accused him of stealing his money and drugs. The argument escalated quickly. As Carlos confronted Daniel, the victim tried to intervene, attempting to separate them and calm his son down.

Instead, Chavarria allegedly turned his anger toward his father. He reportedly shoved the 73-year-old man, then struck him in the face with his fist. The two began to struggle physically—pushing and hitting one another. The victim sustained a visible scratch approximately four inches long on his cheek, consistent with being struck by a fingernail. Officers noted that the elderly victim appeared flushed and stressed during the incident and that he suffers from a heart condition.

Carlos Chavarria was arrested on scene and booked into the Irving Jail, charged with Injury to an Elderly Person with Intent to Cause Bodily Injury. Later that day, he was transferred to the Dallas County Jail, where he has since posted bail.

Long Criminal Record

Court records reveal Chavarria has a lengthy and violent criminal history spanning more than two decades in Dallas County:

  • January 3, 2003: Convicted of Assault Causing Bodily Injury to a Family Member; sentenced to 90 days in jail.

  • February 2010: Convicted of a second family violence assault after attacking his wife at the same residence on High School Lane. He was sentenced to two years in state prison. During that incident, he reportedly scratched her chest and slapped her across the face.

  • October 2013: Arrested for Assault of a Family Member with a Previous Conviction involving his then live-in girlfriend. She told police that Carlos slapped her multiple times while she held their 9-month-old daughter, then took the child from her and continued slapping her. Later, he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her across the floor into another room. He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison, with 4 years suspended under the condition of good behavior while on probation.

  • 2014: Violated his probation and was sentenced to 12 months in Dallas County Jail as part of a plea agreement.

Recent Drug and Firearm Charges

In March 2023, Chavarria was sentenced to four years’ probation after being convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

Due to issues with compliance, a judge revised the conditions of his community supervision on April 29, 2025, ordering him to:

  1. Enroll in intensive outpatient substance abuse counseling within 14 days.

  2. Attend a 12-step recovery program at least three times per week for 90 days.

  3. Provide proof of attendance at these meetings to his supervision officer.

Probation Violation Likely

The May 26 assault on his elderly father may result in revocation of his probation, and Chavarria could face prison time under the terms of his 2023 plea deal.

The case remains under investigation. Irving Police and Dallas County prosecutors are reviewing all relevant charges, including the impact of the latest offense on his prior community supervision terms.
