DFW Airport Initiates Runway Rehabilitation as Part of Maintenance and Upgrade Program

In line with its continuous commitment to advancing airfield infrastructure, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has commenced a significant airfield capital improvement project. This initiative involves the temporary closure of Runway 17R/35L to facilitate essential routine rehabilitation work aimed at replacing aging infrastructure and optimizing operational efficiency. The runway's closure occurred on August 15, 2023, with phased reopening anticipated to commence in the summer of 2024. This marks the third runway rehabilitation within a span of four years at DFW, a standard measure in a runway's lifecycle management.

The rehabilitation project's primary objective is to extend the runway's overall structural integrity, enhance its current and future performance, and mitigate operational disruptions and maintenance expenses. The comprehensive scope encompasses a pavement reconstruction with an asphalt overlay, improvements in drainage systems, and the installation of modernized electrical infrastructure. Notably, the upgraded runway will showcase improved lighting, enhanced signage, and updates to its deicing facilities.

While the temporary closure of Runway 17R/35L is expected to have a minimal impact on DFW's overall flight operations, adjustments have been made to ensure the seamless continuation of services. Aircraft traffic originally allocated to the closed runway will be rerouted to DFW's remaining six runways situated on both the east and west airfields. Among the east airfield's four runways, the three operational runways will accommodate the redistributed traffic, while a limited portion will be redirected to the west runways. Consequently, local residents may observe a temporary elevation in aircraft noise, particularly on the airport's eastern side.
