An 18-year-old man from Haltom City was arrested yesterday evening and charged with Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds after he was found in possession of a loaded gun at the Birdville Fine Arts Athletics Complex on Mid Cities Blvd in North Richland Hills during a football game.
At approximately 9 p.m. on August 31, 2023, school administration received reports of an individual believed to be carrying a weapon at the event. North Richland Hills Police Officers, who were working off duty, along with Birdville ISD Safety and Security personnel, responded to the situation. They located the individual and initiated a conversation with him, resulting in his detainment.
Upon a search of the suspect, officers discovered a handgun with an extended magazine concealed in his waistband. The young man was subsequently arrested and transported to the NRH Joint Detention Facility for booking.
While it is a violation of the law to possess a firearm on school grounds, law enforcement has not found any evidence to suggest that the individual had planned any act of violence, nor have they identified any threats from others.
The NRHPD appreciates the tipsters who alerted officials. This is a reminder to the community that if you see something suspicious, say something. The tip allowed officers to investigate, locate the weapon, and keep those attending the game safe - It's a partnership that the NRHPD truly values.
