A fourth individual has tragically lost their life following a severe crash that unfolded on Interstate 35W Monday evening.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:09 pm on Monday, September 11, 2023, when the Fort Worth Fire Department, Police Department, and MedStar EMS swiftly responded to a multi-vehicle accident on the northbound lanes of I-35W, near Ripy Street.
According to the authorities, the initial collision involved two vehicles, resulting in both of them pulling over to the left shoulder of the freeway. A third vehicle stopped to offer assistance as the involved parties exchanged information. It was at this point that an 18-wheeler collided with the vehicles on the shoulder. Subsequently, a second 18-wheeler collided with the first, leading to a total of five vehicles being involved in the devastating incident.
Emergency responders arrived promptly, discovering three individuals who had succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Three others had sustained life-threatening injuries and were urgently transported to local trauma centers. Unfortunately, one of these individuals has since passed away due to the severity of their injuries.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed the identities of the victims. 31-year-old Susana Longoria and 23-year-old Kiara Kelaya Barker died at the scene. 21-year-old Jasmine Breana Jones lost her life at the hospital and 25-year-old Chase Edward Mapes of Yukon, Oklahoma has since died from his injuries.
At approximately 11:00 am on Tuesday morning, Fort Worth police temporarily closed all northbound lanes of I-35W to conduct further investigations into the accident. As of 1:30 pm, all lanes have been reopened to traffic.
The Fort Worth Traffic Investigations Unit has taken charge of the ongoing investigation into this devastating crash.
