The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) community is mourning the loss of retired U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, who passed away recently. Congresswoman Johnson, an esteemed figure, dedicated 30 years of service to the 30th Congressional District and played a pivotal role in shaping the DART system.
In recognition of her outstanding leadership and unwavering support for DART and public transportation initiatives nationwide, Congresswoman Johnson was honored with the inaugural DART Legacy Award in August 2023.
Expressing condolences, DART Board of Directors Chair Gary A. Slagel remarked, "Congresswoman Johnson was an invaluable advocate for and partner to DART since her time as a Texas State Representative in 1972. We will be forever grateful for her service to our community and DART."
Throughout her tenure, Congresswoman Johnson secured substantial funding for DART, including a landmark $700 million full funding grant agreement from the Federal Transit Administration – the largest ever awarded to DART at the time. Her influence on the Transportation Committee consistently benefited DART and its initiatives.
DART President & CEO Nadine S. Lee expressed deep sorrow, stating, "We are truly devastated to learn of Congresswoman Johnson's passing last night. She epitomized the best of our elected and appointed leaders at all levels of government."
Congresswoman Johnson's impact extended beyond funding, as she played a crucial role in enhancing DART's bus operations, improving coverage and frequency in vulnerable communities. Her efforts also contributed to securing Full Funding Grant Agreements for the Red Line, Blue Line, and Green Line, representing nearly $1 billion in federal funding.
Furthermore, Congresswoman Johnson was instrumental in securing federal funding for the creation of Rosa Parks Plaza in downtown Dallas, paying homage to the civil rights pioneer who fought for the integration of public transportation.
In her final noteworthy contribution, Congresswoman Johnson played a key role in securing a $60 million Core Capacity grant for the Platform Extensions Project. This initiative allowed DART to increase passenger capacity on their busiest and oldest light rail lines.
Her influence and support have left an indelible mark on DART, and the agency expresses heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the family of Rep. Johnson. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson's legacy will be remembered for her dedicated service and significant contributions to public transportation.
