Auto-Pedestrian Incident on I-20 Under Investigation by Arlington Police

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at around 8:49 p.m., the Arlington Police Department responded to a reported auto-pedestrian incident on the westbound lanes of I-20 near Bowen Road.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the driver of a 2009 Lexus RX 350 who reported hitting something that unexpectedly appeared in front of her while traveling westbound on I-20. She suspected it might have been a person.

Human remains were discovered in close proximity to the scene. Investigators believe that following the initial collision, several other vehicles subsequently struck the pedestrian, identified as an adult male. The pedestrian's identity remains unknown, and the reasons for being on the highway are unclear.

The driver of the Lexus promptly stopped, called 911, and cooperated with investigators. She is not facing any charges related to the incident. Investigators believe it was unlikely for her or other drivers to have seen the pedestrian in time to avoid the collision.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will work towards identifying the pedestrian.

A reminder from the Arlington Police Department emphasizes the importance of pedestrians refraining from entering highway lanes. Due to the high speeds of vehicles and the distance needed to brake, attempting to cross a highway is extremely hazardous and can result in a catastrophic collision. Pedestrians seeking to traverse highways should use designated crossings, sidewalks along overpasses, and underpasses for their safety.
