Garland Police Mourns the Passing of Veteran Detective

The Garland Police Department is in mourning following the passing of one of its most exceptional officers, Detective Tommy Barnes. The department announced with deep sadness that Detective Barnes passed away early Saturday morning, May 18, surrounded by his devoted wife, family, and close friends.

Three years ago, Detective Barnes was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Despite the challenges, he displayed immense courage and determination, refusing to yield to the illness. Throughout his battle, he remained steadfast in his faith, prioritizing his family and duties, showing up for work every day.

Detective Barnes led a life of service, beginning with his tenure in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division from 1989 to 1993. He served in Desert Storm, earning several accolades for his bravery and dedication. Following his military service, he worked as a Correctional Officer and later as a Police Officer in various capacities, finally joining the Garland Police Department in 2006.

During his 17 and a half years with the Garland Police, Detective Barnes distinguished himself through his exemplary work ethic and commitment to the community. He received numerous awards and recognitions, including 29 certificates of Merit and two Officer of the Month Awards.

Described as a spiritual, loving, and hardworking individual, Detective Barnes leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, three sons, and one grandson.

The Garland Police Department expressed its gratitude for Detective Barnes's life of service and pledged to carry on his legacy. "Detective Tommy Barnes, thank you for your life of dedication to others, and thank you for being a living example for which we ought to become. We miss you, we love you, and we have it from here," the department stated.

Detective Barnes's passing has left a profound void within the Garland Police Department and the community he served faithfully. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
