Knife-Wielding Man in Tent Fatally Shot by Dallas Officers, Body-Worn Camera Footage Released

On June 28, 2024, at 6:48 pm, Dallas Police were called to a disturbance at 5850 Beltline Road.

The preliminary investigation determined a woman reported a man was hurting her, had knives and a machete, and had threatened her, and a dog at the scene.

Senior Corporal Brandon Massey, Officer Dakota Capparucci and Sergeant Yancy Graves responded and found the suspect and victim in an encampment in the woods, behind an apartment complex.

The officers saw the suspect, identified 34-year-old Cody Watkins, with a knife still inside a tent with the woman caller.

Officers ordered Watkins to drop the knife, and while they were talking with the suspect, the woman was able to get out of the tent.

Officers continued to give commands for the suspect to drop the knife and come out of the tent.

Watkins refused, at one point throwing a knife at officers, while continuing to hold the knife.

When verbal commands were unsuccessful, officers used pepper spray, and less lethal to get Watkins to comply.

The suspect then came toward officers holding the knife, and Senior Corporal Massey and Officer Capparucci fired their weapons at the suspect, hitting him.

Sergeant Graves did not fire his weapon.

The officers immediately administered first aid and called for Dallas Fire and Rescue.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The woman inside the tent was also taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and is being investigated by the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s office were notified and responded to the scene and will conduct their own investigation.

The Office of Community Police Oversight was notified and responded to the scene.
