Speeding Causes 1,456 Fatalities in Texas in 2023; New Campaign Aims to Reduce Deaths

Speed was a factor in more than 160,000 traffic crashes across Texas last year, resulting in 1,456 fatalities—representing a third of all traffic-related deaths in the state.

In response to the high number of speed-related incidents, the Fort Worth Police Department has partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on the "Be Safe. Drive Smart." initiative. This campaign aims to enhance road safety and reduce traffic fatalities. FWPD officials emphasize the importance of buckling up, avoiding distractions, and driving sober to help end the streak of fatalities on Texas roadways.

The "Be Safe. Drive Smart." campaign aligns with Operation Slowdown, a statewide enforcement effort focusing on speed limit compliance. From now until August 4, law enforcement agencies across Texas will increase their efforts to enforce speed limits.

Drivers are encouraged to adjust their speed according to road conditions, allow for increased stopping distance in heavy traffic or adverse weather, and heed road signs indicating reduced speed limits.

This initiative is part of the broader #EndTheStreakTX campaign, which aims to promote safer driving habits and reduce traffic deaths. Since November 7, 2000, Texas has not experienced a day without a traffic fatality.
