Dallas Secures Over $500K in Federal Funding to Boost Traffic Safety and Enforcement

The City of Dallas has been awarded $506,102 in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) through a High Priority grant for fiscal year 2024. The grant will support the Dallas Police Department’s (DPD) Traffic Unit in enforcing safety regulations in high-crash areas and addressing Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH) violations.

Additionally, the funds will be used to implement new technology aimed at improving commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety through enhanced enforcement.

These initiatives align with the City of Dallas Vision Zero Action Plan, adopted by the City Council in 2022. Vision Zero aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and reduce serious injuries by 50% by 2030, complementing the National Safety Council’s “Road to Zero” initiative. DPD’s Traffic Unit is committed to advancing these goals and ensuring safer roads for residents and visitors.

Dallas City Councilmember Omar Narvaez, chair of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, emphasized the city’s dedication: “The City of Dallas has continued to prioritize its efforts to improve mobility safety, with Vision Zero serving as our guide.”

“This grant will help our Dallas Police Department and ultimately, our residents,” added Cara Mendelsohn, chair of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee.

FMCSA Deputy Administrator Vinn White praised the grant’s potential: “We’re proud that these grants can increase public awareness and education and help meet FMCSA’s mission of improving safety on our roadways nationwide.”

The FMCSA awarded over $54 million in High Priority grants to states and entities nationwide to enhance CMV safety, target unsafe driving, and implement new technologies for safer roadways.
