A proposed tax abatement to support the expansion of Americold, a global leader in temperature-controlled warehousing, was recently presented to the Fort Worth City Council. The plan would allow Americold to expand its facility at 4900 Blue Mound Road, with a commitment of $123 million in capital investments and the creation of 85 full-time jobs.
Americold, which operates 242 locations worldwide, including four in Fort Worth, aims to develop an additional 15 acres at its existing 22-acre site. The company has pledged $68 million in real property improvements by December 2027 and $55 million in business personal property by January 2028. In return, the city would grant a seven-year tax abatement of up to 50%, estimated at $2.5 million, contingent upon the company meeting its commitments.
The project is expected to generate over $2.5 million in new net taxes for the city annually, effectively offsetting the abatement in just over three years. Fort Worth, currently lacking sufficient cold storage capacity, could see a significant boost in its supply chain and logistics sectors, especially with local cold storage facilities operating at 99% capacity.
The final vote on the tax abatement will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
