In a case of domestic violence that escalated despite legal protections, Gustavo Cassillas was found guilty of violating an emergency protective order (EPO) and assaulting the victim. The incident dates back to December 2021, when Cassillas was arrested for Assault Family Violence by Impeding Breath, which resulted in the victim being left covered in bruises. Following this assault, a magistrate judge issued an EPO to safeguard the victim.
However, nearly two months later, while the EPO was still in effect, the victim contacted law enforcement again to report another assault by Cassillas. Officers responded to the scene, where they observed Cassillas present and noted visible bruising on the victim. During questioning, Cassillas claimed self-defense, citing scratches he had sustained from a previous altercation. Yet, the detective on the case determined that the nature of Cassillas's injuries was consistent with the victim having defended herself during the attack.
Ultimately, the court found Cassillas guilty, leading to a sentence of 2.5 years in prison for his actions, emphasizing the legal system's commitment to addressing domestic violence and protecting victims.
The Dallas Police Department investigated the case.
