Mexican Man Living in Mesquite Sentenced to 15 Years in Federal Prison for Illegal Re-Entry After Two DWI Convictions

A Mexican man previously convicted of drunk driving — including a fatal crash — was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States, announced U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Leigha Simonton.

Guadalupe Gerardo Reyes-Gonzalez, 54, was charged with illegal re-entry after removal and pleaded guilty in August. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ada Brown on Wednesday.

Reyes-Gonzalez’s criminal history dates back to 1997 when he was convicted of intoxicated manslaughter after a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian. His blood alcohol level was 0.15, nearly double the legal limit at the time. After serving an eight-year sentence, he was deported but repeatedly returned to the U.S. illegally.

In 2021, Reyes-Gonzalez was again convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and served a brief three-day jail sentence. At his federal sentencing, Judge Brown emphasized the danger Reyes-Gonzalez posed to the public, citing his previous conviction for causing a fatality while drunk.

The investigation was led by U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement with assistance from the Mesquite Police Department.
