White Settlement Police officers responding to a suspicious person report on Tuesday morning, November 26, discovered two explosive devices in a van parked in the 9200 block of Jason Drive.
Officers arrived to find a white passenger van with an adult man seated in the driver’s seat. Upon approaching the vehicle, they noticed a handgun in the man’s lap and determined he was experiencing a mental health crisis.
During negotiations, officers seized an opportunity to safely remove the man from the van while he was not in possession of the firearm. Upon further inspection, officers located two explosive devices inside the vehicle.
The White Settlement Police Department contacted federal agencies for assistance, leading to the involvement of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The White Settlement Fire Department also assisted on the scene.
The van was towed after the explosives were safely removed. Police are working with federal investigators to determine the suspect’s intentions and why he was parked in the neighborhood. Search warrants are being obtained to continue the investigation.
