Atmos Energy Offers Winter Preparedness Tips for Homeowners

Atmos Energy is gearing up for the winter heating season, focusing on everything from gas supply to ensuring natural gas service delivery during extreme cold. To help homeowners prepare for cold temperatures, the company has released a set of tips aimed at saving energy and staying safe.

Winter Safety Tips:

  • Never use an oven or stovetop to heat your home.
  • Prevent frozen pipes by running faucets at a trickle, leaving cabinet doors open, and ensuring windows and doors are sealed.
  • Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly.
  • Gently remove snow and ice from gas meters and pipes using a broom or brush; avoid using sharp-edged tools.
  • Keep external vents for dryers and gas appliances clear to avoid a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide.
  • Ensure your gas meter is visible to snowplows, and prevent snow or ice from covering it.

In case of a gas leak, Atmos urges residents to leave the area immediately, call 911, and contact Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667.

Energy-Saving Tips:

  • Lower thermostats to 68°F during the day and 58°F when away from home.
  • Reduce shower time to save on hot water, which accounts for 40% of energy use.
  • Operate laundry and dishwashers only when full.
  • Close the fireplace damper when not in use to conserve heat.
  • Avoid using pool heaters in cold weather.

Atmos Energy customers in Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, and parts of Texas can also access rebates on high-efficiency appliances and weatherization upgrades. For more information, visit Atmos Energy’s website.
