Interim Dallas Police Chief Michael T. Igo addressed the community on February 20th, reaffirming the department's long-standing policy regarding immigration enforcement and emphasizing its commitment to serving all residents, regardless of immigration status.
Chief Igo clarified that the Dallas Police Department has not been asked by state or federal authorities to participate in immigration enforcement efforts. He emphasized that the department's primary mission remains investigating crimes, responding to emergencies, and reducing violent crime.
"The Dallas Police Department remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the safety of every person," Chief Igo stated. "Our top priorities remain investigating crimes, responding to emergencies, and reducing violent crime in the communities we serve."
He further explained that while the department will continue to assist other law enforcement agencies in the arrest of individuals wanted for criminal offenses, regardless of their immigration status, they will not engage in proactive immigration enforcement.
The department's General Order, in effect since October 2017, prohibits officers from stopping or contacting individuals solely to determine their immigration status. Officers are only permitted to inquire about immigration status in cases of lawful detention or arrest.
Chief Igo also stressed the department's commitment to protecting civil rights and preventing racial profiling. He emphasized the importance of community trust and assured residents that victims, witnesses, and those reporting crimes should never hesitate to contact the police, regardless of their immigration status.
"Trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve is essential to public safety," Chief Igo said. "All persons should know that they should never hesitate to report a crime, seek help, or cooperate with police."
The department will continue to monitor and comply with any changes in state or federal laws while upholding its commitment to justice and integrity.
