Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced that a grand jury has indicted 17-year-old Karmelo Sincere Anthony for First-Degree Murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet on April 2, 2025.
District Attorney Willis issued a video statement Tuesday confirming the indictment, stating that the grand jury returned the charge after weeks of evidence presentation. The indictment formally moves the case into the court system, where a trial schedule will be determined by the court.
“Earlier this spring, our community was shaken by what happened at a school track meet in Frisco — the violent loss of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf,” Willis said. “We’re committed to pursuing justice under the law with steadiness and principle.”
Metcalf was stabbed during a track meet attended by students, coaches, and families. The incident drew widespread attention due to the setting and age of the individuals involved. Anthony, who was also 17 at the time, is legally considered an adult under Texas law.
The charge of Murder, a first-degree felony in Texas, carries a punishment of 5 to 99 years or life in prison, along with a possible fine of up to $10,000.
Willis urged the public to remember that an indictment is not a finding of guilt, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
“This case has struck a deep nerve,” Willis said. “Please keep Austin’s family and everyone who loved him in your thoughts and prayers.”
No trial date has been set.
