DALLAS, TX — On Thursday, July 17th, the Dallas Police Department honored the life and sacrifice of Officer Johnny W. Sides, badge #337, by unveiling a commemorative street topper at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and J. B. Jackson Boulevard — the location where he was shot during a traffic stop on January 22, 1951.
Officer Sides succumbed to his injuries on February 7, 1951. He had served with the department for approximately three months at the time of his death.

To recognize his resilience and character, the department later established the "Rookie of the Year" award in his name. Several past recipients of the award attended Thursday’s ceremony, along with members of the command staff, department personnel, and Officer Sides’ family.
