AUSTIN, Texas — Gas prices across Texas continue to rise, with the statewide average reaching $3.87 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The current price is seven cents higher than last week and $1.04 more than this time last year. Nationally, the average price stands at $4.17 per gallon, up nine cents from a week ago and 94 cents higher year over year.
Among major metropolitan areas in Texas, San Angelo reported the highest average price at $4.12 per gallon, while drivers in the Lubbock area are paying the lowest at $3.31 per gallon.
AAA officials said prices remain elevated at levels not seen since July 2022, driven in part by continued volatility in global oil markets. While crude oil prices briefly dipped below $100 per barrel following news of a temporary two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, prices have since rebounded.
“Gas prices in Texas remain elevated compared to what drivers have grown used to in recent months, and shifts in crude oil prices continue to influence what we’re seeing at the pump,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “Even with news of a temporary ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, oil markets have remained unsettled, and that uncertainty can continue to contribute to price fluctuations.”
AAA said continued uncertainty in the energy market could lead to further price swings in the coming weeks.
The organization also offered tips for drivers looking to improve fuel efficiency, including reducing speed, avoiding excessive idling, maintaining proper tire pressure, and minimizing extra weight in vehicles. AAA also recommends planning routes ahead of time and using fuel reward programs to help offset costs.
