IRVING, Texas - An Irving Police Department major crimes detective has received international recognition for excellence in homicide investigations, adding to another major honor he received earlier this year.
Detective Stephen Herring was presented with the International Homicide Investigators Association Award for Excellence during the organization’s awards recognition ceremony on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the New Orleans Marriott Warehouse District.
The Irving Police Department announced the recognition, describing the award as a reflection of Herring’s dedication, professionalism and work as a homicide investigator.
“We’re proud to announce that Major Crimes Detective Herring has been honored with the International Homicide Investigators Association Award for Excellence,” the department said. “This distinguished award recognizes exceptional dedication, professionalism, and excellence in homicide investigations and is a reflection of Detective Herring’s outstanding work and commitment to the profession.”
The International Homicide Investigators Association presents its Award for Excellence to law enforcement professionals who demonstrate exceptional innovation, perseverance and dedication in death and homicide investigations.
The recognition can encompass accomplishments in complex homicide investigations, evidence collection and examination, use of forensic science and emerging technology, successful case prosecutions and career achievements within the field.
Herring has served with the Irving Police Department since November 2021, according to records from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
The international award is Herring’s second significant recognition this year.
Earlier in 2026, Herring was named Officer of the Year during the Irving Police Department’s 30th Annual Blue Tie Banquet.
His latest honor places him among homicide investigators recognized beyond the local level for their work investigating some of law enforcement’s most serious and complex cases.
“Congratulations, Detective Herring! Well deserved!” the Irving Police Department said in announcing the award.
