Texas Health and Human Services Commission Urges Women to Prioritize Breast Cancer Screenings in October

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is advocating for preventive care and screenings for women during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, women between the ages of 50 to 74 are recommended to have a mammogram once every two years. Women aged 40 to 49, especially those at higher risk, are advised to consult their doctors about getting a mammogram every two years.

"Routine screenings play a crucial role in early cancer detection, even before signs and symptoms appear," emphasized Faith Sandberg-Rodriguez, HHS Associate Commissioner for Family Clinical Services. "We encourage women to take control of their health and talk to their doctor about getting screened."

In the previous year, Texas saw 19,921 women diagnosed with breast cancer, with an estimated 3,415 losing their lives to the disease, making it the state's second most common cause of cancer-related deaths for women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasize that routine breast cancer screenings are pivotal in preventing such fatalities.

The HHSC's Breast and Cervical Cancer Services (BCCS) program funds clinics statewide, offering free breast cancer screening and diagnostic services. These services encompass clinical breast examinations, mammograms, and breast biopsies, and are accessible to eligible women. The BCCS program also finances cervical cancer screenings and treatments for precancerous cervical conditions.

Last year, BCCS facilitated over 30,000 women in receiving screenings, diagnostics, and preventive services. Among them, more than 300 were diagnosed with breast cancer. Uninsured and underinsured Texas women with an income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level are eligible to apply for BCCS assistance. Moreover, local clinics assist eligible women in applying for the Medicaid for Breast and Cervical Cancer program, which covers treatments for breast and cervical cancers.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October features significant dates to remember:

  • Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day – Oct. 13
  • Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day – Oct. 18
  • National Mammography Day – Oct. 20

The HHSC urges all eligible women to take advantage of these resources, emphasizing the importance of early detection and regular screenings in the fight against breast cancer.
