In a heartfelt gesture of gratitude, Denton Police Sgt. J.R. Velasquez has nominated three individuals for the Patriot Award, honoring their unwavering support during his 11-month deployment to Alaska. Sgt. Velasquez, serving as a Holistic Wellness Chaplain for the Army’s 11th Airborne Division, dedicated his mission to reducing military suicide rates.
Alongside his fellow chaplains on Mission 100, Sgt. Velasquez provided counseling and support to service members, making a positive impact on struggling soldiers and contributing to a significant reduction in suicide rates. Their efforts also played a crucial role in diminishing the stigma surrounding mental health within the military.
Returning to Denton PD in May 2023, Sgt. Velasquez took a moment to reflect on the invaluable support his family received from the City of Denton during his deployment. In recognition of this support, he nominated three individuals for the Patriot Award.
The honorees include Frank Dixon, Assistant City Manager; Steve Buchanan, Assistant Police Chief; and Shanika Mayo, Assistant Director of Police Administrative Services. The Patriot Award recognizes employers who go above and beyond in supporting National Guard and Reserve members through various measures.
The awards were presented this morning, highlighting the commitment of Denton's leaders to supporting the military service of their employees. The City and police department express pride in supporting Sgt. Velasquez and all members of the Denton PD family who serve in the military.
